We first came into visual-touch with the work of Nathaniel Deas through a mutual friend, Shaun Hague, who's show at Double Door (Chicago, IL) this past December was complimented by a great poster. With Chicago depicted in all its winter glory, the poster worked extremely well, and is emblematic of Deas' unique style. His layout and type often harkens to the historical rock poster scene in San Francisco in the 60's, combining it with a vibe that's purely illustrative and very much his own. While we enjoy concise, design-oriented work as well, we can surely appreciate art that is so clearly and unabashedly created by a human hand. It's not a logo, nor a visual blurb, Deas' posters are 18x24" visual storybooks. The images are crafted and composed with a sense of rock poster art history and the palpable confidence of an artist who's found a formidable formula.
