Summer has barely arrived and it already feels half over, nonetheless, we keep it moving with the IPaintMyMind Digital Dig, curated and steamrolled by our keynote IPaintMyMind Artist Liaison. Shwet Musali - All F**ing Night A nod to old school house with all the 808 goodness, lush synth chords, a bouncing bassline and deep vocal sample. For DJs, this could be a good buildup track or a late night interlude pick. This one can play as long as the title suggests and in many different settings. Disclosure - F For You Disclosure's at it again! Like the track above this also has some old school house elements but with a bit poppier sound and arrangement. The vocals are so catchy! Be sure to peep their recently dropped album, Settle for more heat by this young duo. Kelpe - Answered An electronic journey in harmonies and texture. This is something I'd like to play an epic adventure/RPG video game to, it's great listening to this track unfold. AMS ft Adam J - Time Don't Rewind Local MC and b-boy competition host extraordinaire, AMS just released a third killer album. This is one of the cuts featuring Adam J and with production from a past digital dig artist, Sev Seveer. The drums say future but that horn sample says classic while the MCs also walk that thin line. Breach - Jack More house in the mix, but this one has that prime time bump and phrasing that keeps the few elements interesting. Breach is Ben Westbeech's moniker for house and so far his work has been killing it on the floor. Shouts to MarMar for the heads up! Phoenix - Entertainment (Blood Orange Remix) I'm a fan of Devonté Hynes' songwriting and the dreamy, DIY sound of his Blood Orange project. This remix delivers the goods re-interpreting a track from another indie band I like. I love the crunchy drums, stargazy high-notes and stretched out guitar riffs. Violet - Where The Wild Things Grow Slowing things down with this release from the Luvluvluv record label. I DJ a fair amount of weddings, and would be happy to slip this track in during dinner or for a slow dance. Violet's voice reminds me of Lana Del Rey but the content's a little more homely, which is a good thing in some settings. Red Astaire ft Dynamite Mc - Suga Dumpling Summer jam! This is the kind of funk and fun that got me into Freddie Cruger aka Red Astaire when I first heard about him through a Mushroom Jazz comp. The drums are break-y (funk breaks, not breakbeat!) and the reggae elements bring the sunshine in. Definitely an outdoor patio early afternoon mood lifer! iixii - Malthusian Euphoria Who is iixii and what set of machines are creating this frenetic acid jam?! Sound effects fly in and out, sometimes getting abruptly cut off then re-introduced over a headbang beat and grinding 303 bassline. The only thing we know is he mostly does these tracks live in one take and refers to them as "prayers"! Thundercat - Hearbreaks + Setbacks Thundercat, who has provided some great fast moving basslines for labelmate Flying Lotus, releases his solo project! I wasn't sure what to expect since I only knew of him through FlyLo but this track (and many others on the release) show he's got great production chops too. I like how it alludes to broken-beat with the drums but somehow manages to keep the overall groove steady. Combined with the vocals and swaying synth chords this is both art house and lounge ready! Radiant Devices - Statement Of Radiant Devices are a local Chicago band comprised of movers-and-shakers in the art, music and poetry scene. On top of the organizational work they do, they can also move and shake ya with their music. It's experimental and hard to categorize with elements of rock, industrial, electronica, punk and hiphop intertwined throughout, which makes it music that gets better with every listen. This track showcases the lead vocalist, Mojdeh's range of expression from spoken word to singing to straight out shouting, over a drony melody and eclectic hodgepodge of percussive goodness. Bev Lee Harling - Why Don't You Do Right (Suonho remix) Suonho is another artist that has been a digital pick before, and with every new remix he drops, it's great to see how he develops and refine his sound. This one adds the necessary funk and bump to Bev Lee Harling's swingy ode to the retro sound. I actually thought Suonho re-worked an old 45 but turns out the singer is a London up and comer. Looking forward to hear more from both!
